The first conversations with protégé's can be too formal. That inhibits establishing a more personal relationship beyond what is typical of their academic adviser.
Don't be so formal but start with something non-threatening. I use geography – talk about if you grew up close to where they are studying, if you traveled through the area but don't mention their university. Maybe you have relatives in the area. Ask how their college sports teams are doing. If you rush into academic and professional topics, you become another academic adviser.
